ISIS is an intense pulsed neutron source providing beams of neutrons and muons to enable scientists to study the structure and properties of matter for the benefit of Science and Engineering in the UK and abroad. The Radioactive Waste Section is in the ISIS Health Physics & Facility Safety group at RAL. This section is responsible for the management of all the radioactive waste generated by the ISIS Spallation Neutron Source Facility and the one produced from former proton accelerators based at RAL.
About the role
A Health Physics Surveyor is required for the radiological safety programme of the ISIS spallation neutron sources at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
You will be part of a team that provides essential health physics control and technician support for ISIS operations and for the waste management programme.
You will be involved in personnel radiation protection, supporting the waste management team, on radioactive material movement, after the corresponding training in forklift truck and crane, and storage and keeping records.
You will have to be able to operate in all ISIS areas and manipulate and operate all the health physics equipment.
Duties of the role will include:
- Health Physics surveys and records keeping
- Producing survey reports, inputting into risk assessments, procedures and undertaking record keeping.
- Posting and updating permanent and temporary radiation and contamination hazard warning signs as necessary
- Supporting day-to-day procedures concerned with the operation of the ISIS personal dosimetry service which covers Laboratory staff, visiting scientists and contractors
- Supporting the radioactive waste operation team
- Assisting in the control, movement and accounting of radioactive machine components and experimental samples within ISIS complex and any subsequent movement off site
About you
You will have practical knowledge of radiation protection and experience in using health physics equipment and keeping detailed records and compiling reports.
You must also be willing to undertake basic STFC specific training in radiation protection monitoring, and specific training on overhead crane and forklift truck and as a first aider.
You must have the ability to use Microsoft Office packages and be willing to undertake STFC
Software package training.
